Job Description

Our client, a leading Tier 1 manufacturing supplier is looking for a Controls Specialist to add value to our Engineering Team. This successful candidate will be responsible for driving process improvements, and integrating automation systems. This includes expertise in PLC, robotics, and HMI programming, as well as instrumentation and calibration. The role will also focus on supporting Continuous Improvement initiatives, new program implementation, equipment support, and troubleshooting daily operations. The position reports to the Plant Manager and Engineering Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the development and implementation of automation solutions, including PLC/SCADA programming, robotic integration, and HMI development, ensuring these align with business objectives and IATF 16949 standards
  • Oversee the integration of automation systems across production lines, identifying opportunities for improvement and ensuring seamless functionality between devices, PLCs, SCADA systems, and communication networks
  • Develop and manage project plans for automation-related initiatives, ensuring that program launches, Kaizen projects, and continuous improvement initiatives that are within budget and timeline
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and enhance control systems (PLC, VFD, HMI, vision systems) and automated machinery to minimize downtime and improve operational efficiency
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for complex automation failures, working closely with third-party vendors and internal teams to identify solutions and mitigate recurring issues
  • Ensure a robust backup system for all automation programs and parameters, implementing secure and efficient storage methods to safeguard critical control data
  • Design and implement a comprehensive calibration process for all instrumentation and automation devices, ensuring accuracy and compliance with operational standards
  • Lead Change Management efforts by documenting and managing all modifications to automation-related programs, parameters, and devices, using appropriate tools like CMMS, PLCs, and other company platforms
  • Maintain and organize technical documentation, including process control narratives, P&ID’s, loop diagrams, and I/O lists, using platforms such as PLC, CMMS, and the Maintenance Library
  • Support cross-functional collaboration with Plant Teams, Managers, and Supervisors to ensure timely issue resolution and align automation strategies with overall plant goals

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • University degree in Engineering, specializing in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering
  • A minimum of 5 years of direct experience in automation controls with a focus on PLC programming, robotic integration, and HMI development
  • In-depth experience with PLC systems (Allen Bradley, Siemens), SCADA systems, and industrial networks configuration/troubleshooting
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical documentation, including electrical schematics, process diagrams, control panel drawings, and government regulations
  • Proficient in Motion Control systems, particularly Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and robot programming (Fanuc, ABB, Siemens)
  • Knowledge of servo motor controls and automation systems integration across various industrial applications.
  • Strong skills in MySQL, MSSQL, AutoCAD, and the ability to design and modify technical reports
  • Analytical skills to perform troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and provide sustainable corrective actions
  • Excellent project management background, with the ability to manage CI initiatives, Kaizen projects, and program launches related to automation systems
  • Solid understanding of lean manufacturing principles and how they apply to automation and control systems
  • May require travel between Ontario plant locations and occasional travel to the USA
