Job Description

On behalf of our civil infrastructure and operation client, we are currently recruiting for a Junior Civil Engineer (EIT) - Construction to join their team in Detroit, MI. As A Junior Civil Engineer (EIT) – Construction you will be responsible for supporting construction coordinators and managers at the clients sites, progressively taking on more independent work as experience is gained. The candidate will also provide assistance in preparing progress reports, providing input into sub committees, technical, engineering and mathematical measurements/analysis and input, and documenting observations on the job site.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Observes construction on site to ensure contract compliance and collect project data
  • Documents observations on site. Activities will include:
    • Visiting site - 2-3/day and adjusting when major activities start/end
    • Recording activities in Daily Project Work Record (crews, equipment, materials)
    • Taking and documenting progress photos of reported activities
    • Producing activities daily reports
    • Coordinating with contractor to determine daily activities
    • Uploading all data to eBuilder
  • Assembles, collects and maintains project related information for use in project planning, execution and quality control. Prepares and assists in presenting project related information and project status updates to sub committees involved in the project. This will include:
    • Review/reconcile contractor daily work records (if available)
    • Comparison/analysis with contractor work records, schedule, reports (if available)
    • Cross reference operations and activities with Owner Engineer & MDOT inspectors recorded and observed data Comparing daily activities to 3 weeks look ahead schedule by contractor and document findings/comments
  • Assisting with weekly client summary reports
  • Fully embraces and participation in construction site health and safety policies and programs as required
  • Reviews contractor submissions in collaboration with the Senior Engineer, verifying that each submission is following compliance with the Project Agreement and legislation. Prepares project compliance reports when needed
  • Helps review, compare and analyze the various cost estimates received on a regular basis
  • Reports productivity rates/plan from contractor staff when and if possible
  • Attends relevant meetings, working groups or committees and liaise with internal Subject Matter Experts (SME) and contractor in order to meet objectives.
REQUIED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
  • University Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering technical diploma
  • Registration or qualified for registration as an Engineer-in-Training
  • Minimum 1-3 years of relevant work experience
  • Civil/structural experience required
  • Field level experience to understand and interpret field activities and operations, considered an asset
  • Experience with P3 model, Design Build, and complex projects, considered an asset
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and any additional civil/structural software an asset
  • Knowledge of engineering analysis and design software packages, considered an asset
  • Knowledge of civil/structural systems, means, methods, materials and industry standards
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, including MIOSHA
  • Ability to recognize when technical problems could develop and initiate the appropriate level of escalation
