Reliability & Maintainability (R&M)

Reliability and maintainability is an efficiency study of production equipment. Analyzing different aspects of machinery can help determine where equipment may need to be changes or upgraded to allow for a higher output. The areas most commonly reviewed are as follows:

- Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) -

MTBF is a time study resulting in how often a machine will go down during a typical shift, day, or week of production. This study helps to determine where the bottleneck machine in the system exists. The bottleneck machine or operation is described as the one that has the most downtime.

- Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) -

MTTR is a time study showing how long it takes to repair a machine. Reviewing the length of time it takes to repair a machine encompasses the analysis of the problem, calling the maintenance department, requesting maintenance department provide tools and parts for repair as well as the time required for the actual repair of the equipment.

MEDA Limited has experienced engineering personnel who can work with your teams to perform an accurate analysis of the above studies and aid in determining the bottleneck machine or operation and what possible changes can be readily made to increase equipment efficiency.

- Equipment Serviceability / Maintainability -

To keep repair time to a minimum, equipment serviceability must be largely regarded with new machine design. Let MEDA Limited oversee the design of new equipment purchases to ensure regular maintenance locations are kept safe and easy to access. We can also review your current equipment and make suggestions on how to increase the serviceability of those machines with high MTTR.

- Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) -

How effective your equipment is depends on its available and performed uptime. Determining the availability and performance of your equipment consists of reviewing the time studies above, minus expected equipment downtime, and determining factors such as machine failures / faults, speed rates and quality losses. Once these areas of your bottleneck machine or operation are determined, you can see where your efforts need to be concentrated in order to increase equipment effectiveness. Let MEDA Limited help analyze these losses and provide resolution ideas. We can also implement any upgrades needed to your equipment that have already been identified.

R&M as a Predictive Tool

- Preventive Maintenance (PM) -

PM is the key tool in keeping your equipment in top working condition. Each machine in your facility will have a specific PM schedule. This maintenance, when performed on time can significantly increase the uptime of equipment. PM can also be used as a predictive tool; tasks can be set up to verify certain wear criteria and working conditions. Let our team of engineers work with your maintenance group to determine whether your PM schedules can be upgraded and suggestions for verification frequency defined. We will ensure that these upgrades will help reduce the MTTR and increase MTBF efforts.

- Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA) -

The act of analyzing potential failures in your equipment and how these failures influence downtime and repair time is an effective method of predicting equipment reliability. Recognizing the causes of these failures and implementing preventions and detections is not always cut and dry. There may be underlying factors that can influence certain prevention or detection methods. Perhaps your process is in need of an improved PM schedule or an upgrade made to the equipment to increase equipment availability. MEDA Limited has performed the analysis of failures and causes as well as implemented preventive and detection methods to aid in lowering the severity of, or removing potential failure modes.

- Inventory Part Availability -

Many times the MTTR study shows that spare parts are not readily accessible and need to be purchased, thus increasing the repair time, in most cases unnecessarily. MEDA Limited has a specialized team of spare part acquisition engineers who work with your maintenance department to ensure that typically failing parts are kept on hand. We can also help you identify other critical parts that may soon fail and should be purchased to reduce the wait time in getting these parts in your facility.

Continuous Improvement

- Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS) -

In order to keep equipment reliably working in its most efficient way, reporting and tracking failures must be ongoing. The data must be analyzed to ensure that the proper corrective actions are implemented when needed. Let MEDA Limited implement a new system or organize and coordinate your current situation to help you stay on track with equipment failures. We will ensure that corrective actions are suggested and implemented.

Continuous improvements such as FRACAS should also be implemented in your supplier locations. Please see MEDA Limited for more information on cascading your R&M requirements to your suppliers. We will liaise and teach your suppliers the practices you follow, which will increase incoming product quality.
